Danger is measured in many different ways and with many different statistics. Although the first thing we generally think of is physical danger, there is also an economic danger, environmental danger, and many other things that pose a risk to us as humans. When considering the cities of the world, every place has its benefits and risks. There is definitely nowhere on the planet that is 100% safe, crime-free, and without a single threat, that’s for sure.
However, there are plenty of cities that stand out for the amount of danger that exists there. The measurement of this danger is
based on the number of murders that take place in each of these cities. These statistics are gained using a handful of important characteristics. First of all, only cities outside of war zones are considered. Plus, the cities have to have 300,000 or more citizens as well as easily verifiable and reliable homicide records.Out of all the cities in the world with those considerations in mind, there are 10 that stand out. These cities lead the pack in murders and violence against both citizens and tourists. It’s important to note that the majority of violence is towards citizens, though. Although most of them are found in South America, there are a couple of notable outliers like St. Louis in the USA and Cape Town in South Africa. Take a look at some of the shocking statistics and interesting reasons why these 10 cities are the most dangerous in the entire world.
10Palmira, Colombia
9San Salvador, El Salvador
8St. Louis, USA
7Cape Town, South Africa
6Fortaleza, Brazil
5Natal, Brazil
4Ciudad Guayana, Venezuela
3Caracas, Venezuela
2Acapulco, Mexico
Although Acapulco, Mexico is well-known as a flagship resort city, the reality behind these resorts is full of danger and violence. Acapulco is one of the most dangerous cities in Mexico and in the entire world, often competing with Tijuana for the top spot. 2018 statistics reveal that Acapulco has around 111 homicides per 100,000 people and had 948 murders in the past year.
Tensions between organized crime groups and police cause serious and often public violence like firefights and shootouts. The tourist areas of Acapulco experience some crime and violence, but the vast majority of the city’s danger comes from the outside neighborhoods.
In general, the violence and homicide is considered to be the result of a drug war. Cartels and crime groups control many of Acapulco’s poor neighborhoods as well as the flow of drugs in and out of the city. Since 2014, the number of homicide has been steadily increasing as the drug war has just continued growing. America has had a growing demand for drugs like heroin and opiates, putting pressure on many Mexican drug cartels.
Other reasons for the increase and steady continuation of violence in Acapulco are the competition for new or recently opened up territories as well as some changes to the law that made it much easier to lawbreakers to go free. More evidence is now required by the courts to lock up anyone suspected of a crime. This means that many cartel members, corrupt politicians, or even drug dealers are able to stay out of jail and on the streets.
