Number 10: The Congress Plaza Hotel in Chicago, Illinois

From unexplainable noises in the ballroom and hallways to appliances suddenly turning themselves on and off this place is a must see for ghost hunters. The scariest sighting that has occurred over the years

is that of a single gloved hand sticking out of the wall. There are a few other ghosts that call this place home, one of which is said to be the previous owner and gangster, Al Capone, who is said to have made this place his home after his death.

This Victorian style Hotel’s most famous ghost is that of Kate Morgan. After spending 5 days at this hotel, waiting for a lover that never came, her body was found in a staircase that lead to the beach. The wound was considered self-inflected but some question this. She still stays at her former room and her beauty has been spotted by several guests. Though she resides in her room she likes to pull pranks throughout the hotel.

 

Number 8: Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, Los Angeles California

Named after President Theodore Roosevelt this location is said to be haunted by many mysterious guests. One of which is a man in white who plays the piano and when approached disappears. Some of the more known ghost haunting the hotel is Marilyn Monroe and Montgomery Clift. Monroe has been spotted in a mirror in room 229 and dancing in the ballroom. There is one spot in the ballroom that is usually around 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the room. Clift is said to keep his hauntings to room 928 where he stayed while he filmed From Here to Eternity. It is also reported that there is trumpet music that comes from this room.

 

Number 7: The Equinox Hotel in Manchester, Vermont

This is the most haunted Hotel in Vermont and has been around since 1769. It was often frequented by President Lincoln along with his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, and their kids. Mary is said to still frequent the hotel with a small child and can be seen throughout the hotel. Other reports include full bodied figures looming in corners and even whispered voices that disappear when you get too close. These whispers often learn quest and staff names and can be heard whispering them time to time. This is one of the five oldest inns in all of North America and has been around since 1727. The inn has been added on to over the years. During the Revolutionary War the Inn was housing for Washington and his men, the dead were kept in the basement until winter had passed so they could be buried properly. Their restless spirits still haunt the Inn today. It is believed that some do not know they are dead, while others regret dying and wish for life. There are many entities in the Inn besides soldiers. Many of which reside in room 6 of the inn. Including two children that laugh and move things around and can be seen in the mirror.

This hotel catches the middle ranking in our Top 10 Scariest Haunted Hotels in America. It is made up of five separate buildings, all of which are reported to be haunted. Some of the buildings were once used as military hospitals or stand on the grounds of military hospitals. As a result many soldiers from both the 18th and 19th century haunt this location. A fire burnt down a building in 1958 and the buildings 100 and 200 were built where it once stood. Adding more untimely deaths to the list of spirits haunting this area. Paranormal activity includes visions of soldiers and doctors, some wounded. Some guests have even caught glimpses of a Civil War hospital scene, bloodstains that vanish and re appear, and heard music playing from empty rooms.

 

Number 4: The Lemp Mansion in St. Louis, Missouri

This hotel is haunted by several entities. One of which is a boy name Zeke. Zeke was born with Down Syndrome and hidden in the attic by his family. He now roams the hotel and has been called the “Monkey-faced Boy”. There have been several complaints by both guests, staff and even construction companies that have worked on the building during renovation. Things like mysterious voices and knocks on the door. Some haunting experiences have been more dramatic, such as loud disembodied voices, the feeling of being watched things disappearing from rooms and even glasses at the bar being thrown across the room. Not to mention apparitions and the locking of doors from inside rooms.

Two of these ghosts are murdered children who had yet to experience the joys of life. Another well-known ghost is the slave Chloe, who after having her ear cut off, poisoned the family she worked for. All died except for the sir of the house who had her hanged. To go with this deaths is the death of William Drew Winter who died after being shot on the 17th step. His dying footsteps can still be head today along with a repeated haunting chord from a piano.

It has a phantom piano player and previous owner Mr. Stanley has been seen there with his wife. He has also been seen in his office. In room 407 the smell of cherry pipe tobacco can be smelt, the favorite of previous owner The Earl of Dunraven. In room 217 there was a gas leak explosion that nearly killed a staff member. Who since her death has returned to haunt the room. A small child is reported to haunt the second floor and could be the cause of mysterious feeling of clothes being pulled.

This place has your usual paranormal activity, footsteps, voices, the feeling like you are being watched and moving of objects but it has much more than that as well. It has also paranormal orbs and some high personalities that like to prank those who stay there. Some of these spirits include a doctor, Norman Baker, and one of his cancer patients Theodora, from when the Hotel was a hospital. Theodora often requests help finding a key while the doctor makes his rounds for his patients. One ghost, Morris the cat, is reported to be spotted in his night gown and likes to appear at the foot of your bed during the night.
