Nearly all pet owners cherish and adore their pets just as they do other members of the family, and many of these pets lead healthy and happy lives filled with love and affection; however, many family pets are extremely loyal and have been known to go to great lengths for their owners, showing that they can be there as well when the tables are turned. This includes facing incredible danger and terrible odds. Following are 10 Pets that Saved Family Members from Imminent Danger.

10. Shana:

The story of Shana began when she was rescued from the wild. The dog appears to be at least one-half wolf, but bonded with the 81 year old Fertig’s nonetheless. During the winter, the couple became trapped under a fallen tree during a severe snowstorm in upstate New York. Although the warmth and protection of their home was only about 200 feet away, they would injure themselves or get caught in the severely cold wind, so they huddled together to keep warm. Amazingly, Shana the half wolf appeared out of nowhere and literally dug a deep pathway through the snow, similar to that of a mineshaft, and barked at them to follow. After about two hours, the couple made it to the safety of their house where Shana acted as a heating blanket because the power had been cut off. For her courage and bravery in the eye of the storm, Shana received The Citizens for Humane Animal Treatment Hero Award for Bravery.

9. Katrina:

Such is the case with the black Labrador ironically named Katrina, who saved a drowning young man from steadily and quickly rising waters. Several hours later during the storm, Katrina herself was saved by a rescue team and the favor was returned. After reaching safety and later n the year, Katrina was honored at the Genesis Awards and received a well-deserved standing ovation from the crowd.

They were all treated at a nearby hospital and no one was injured as a result. As a result of his heroics, intelligence, and presence of mind to react in time, Shelby became the 45th Skippy Hero Dog of the Year for saving the lives of two children and two adults.

7. Tara the Family Cat:

It isn’t only dogs who come to the rescue of their owners and family members. In a recent incident in Bakersfield California, a young child was riding his bike on the front driveway beside a parked vehicle when a dog approached from the rear, walked up behind the child and grabbed a hold of his ankle and pulled him to the ground, biting and twisting all the while. Suddenly and seemingly out of nowhere, the family cat leapt into action and attacked the dog, who immediately let go of its grip on the child. The cat then chased the dog until it was clear he was on his way and then returned to the child. The amazing thing about the incident involving Tara the cat is that the whole thing was captured on video and can be seen on YouTube with a “cat saves boy from dog’ search.
